UNIT 04 · PALILI-CLASS · ROBOTIC WEEDER

PALILI-MICRO

from Luganda okupalila, to weed by hand. The micro replaces the bend.

A small autonomous crawler that identifies weeds vs crop and removes them mechanically. Zero chemicals. Zero soil compaction. No human bent over for eight hours.

02 / HOW IT WORKS

Component by component.

01

The Solar Panel Roof

An integrated 200W solar panel forms the entire upper deck. No separate dock or charging station is required. The machine charges wherever it parks in the sun.

SPECS

  • Output200 W peak
  • IntegrationStructural roof
  • Charge time4 h direct sun
  • CoatingAnti-dust hydrophobic
02

The Vision and AI System

Two downward cameras feed an on-device edge-AI processor trained on African crop and weed species. Identifies and classifies weeds vs crop at species level in under 40 ms per frame.

SPECS

  • Cameras2 downward
  • Latency<40 ms
  • SpeciesAfrican crop + weed library
  • UpdateOTA model
03

The Mechanical Cutting Blade

A retracting tungsten-carbide blade cuts each identified weed at the root crown. No herbicide. No soil disturbance beyond the weed itself. Crop seedlings are physically avoided, not chemically tolerated.

SPECS

  • MaterialTungsten carbide
  • ActionRoot-crown cut
  • ChemicalsNone
  • ServiceUser-replaceable
04

The Rubber Track System

Twin rubber tracks distribute the 40kg machine across a wide footprint. Ground pressure is far below a human boot, preventing the soil compaction that hand-weeding crews routinely cause.

SPECS

  • Tracks2 rubber
  • Ground pressure<6 kPa
  • ClimbUp to 20°
  • TurnZero-radius
05

The 24V Powertrain

Low-voltage architecture chosen for safety and ease of repair. Two electric track motors give true independent drive with zero-radius turning between vegetable rows.

SPECS

  • Voltage24 V DC
  • Motors2 track motors
  • Battery24 V · 1.6 kWh
  • Runtime16 h continuous
06

The Onboard Computer

Custom edge-AI accelerator runs the weed-classification model locally. No cloud round-trip is required to make a cut decision. The field works whether the cellular network does or not.

SPECS

  • ComputeCustom edge accelerator
  • Power draw8 W
  • StorageOnboard SSD
  • CoolingPassive
07

The Cellular Telemetry

Dual-SIM modem reports progress, photographs and exceptions over WhatsApp. SMS fallback when data is unavailable. Onboard buffer holds 30 days of operational logs.

SPECS

  • SIMDual
  • TransportWhatsApp + SMS
  • Buffer30 days
  • Languages5
08

The Weatherproofing

Sealed to IP66. Designed for the African wet season: direct rain, mud, and heavy dust. Service hatches use captive bolts, not glue or proprietary clips.

SPECS

  • IngressIP66
  • Operating temp0 – 45 °C
  • HatchesCaptive metric bolts
  • WashDirect hose-down
09

The Repair-First Design

Every fastener is metric. Every electrical connector is a sourceable agricultural type. The blade, tracks and battery are explicitly user-serviceable. Workshop intervention is reserved for the computer board.

SPECS

  • FastenersMetric standard
  • Max wrench13 mm
  • User-serviceableBlade · tracks · battery
  • ToolsHand tools only
10

The Language Interface

Commands sent in the farmer's own language via WhatsApp. "Weed row 4 to row 12." "Stop." Replies include photos, weed counts and hectares cleared.

SPECS

  • LanguagesLuganda · Swahili · Runyankole · Amharic · English
  • MediaText · photo · voice
  • Onboarding<20 min
  • NetworkOptional

06 / ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES

What guided this machine.

  1. 01The bend in the back is the problem to solve.
  2. 02Chemicals are a shortcut. Mechanics are an answer.
  3. 03Ground pressure must stay below a human boot.
  4. 04The model runs on the machine, not in the cloud.
  5. 05Every part that wears is a part the farmer can change.
